Jump to Recipe

This blueberry mojito recipe is the ultimate summer drink! It’s fresh, bubbly, and full of boozy blueberry flavor.

The secret to packing these mojitos with flavor is using blueberry simple syrup. It’s the easiest way to smoothly incorporate that wonderful flavor without having big clumps of blueberries clogging up your straw.

The blueberry simple syrup also adds the perfect amount of sweetness to balance out the kick from the rum and fresh mint.

The best part is that the blueberry simple syrup can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge, so you can easily whip up a blueberry mojito in a few minutes whenever you feel like it!

What’s in Blueberry Simple Syrup?

Simple syrup is usually made with equal parts water and sugar. The mixture is heated to help the sugar dissolve, which yields a sweet syrup that can be used to sweeten and flavor just about anything!

This recipe makes a blueberry simple syrup by adding in a a cup of blueberries and a bit of lime juice and zest.

Blueberry Mojito Ingredients & Substitutions

Like I mentioned above, this recipe is pretty straight forward! However, there are some substitutions and swaps you can make if needed.

  • Granulated Sugar – I like using granulated sugar to make the blueberry simple syrup, but you can also use extra fine sugar or caster sugar.
  • Blueberries – You can use fresh or frozen blueberries in this recipe. If you use frozen I recommend simmering the simple syrup a couple extra minutes!
  • Lime Zest and Juice – The fresh lime zest and juice in this recipe really brighten the flavor of the syrup and cocktail. I don’t recommend skipping it, but if you don’t have a lime on hand the syrup will still turn out without it.
  • Mint Leaves – Fresh is an absolute must in any mojito. Be sure to get a bunch so that you have enough to garnish the cups.
  • White Rum – Since we’re mixing this with other ingredients, you don’t need top shelf rum! However, it does need to be a light or white rum. Be sure to avoid spiced rum! Or if you want to make a virgin blueberry mojito, swap out the rum for extra sparkling water.
  • Sparkling water – A bit of bubbles makes everything better. You can use club soda, plain seltzer, or even flavored lime seltzer!

How Do You Make a Blueberry Mojito?

I love this recipe because it seriously takes less than 10 minutes to make! Just to make sure it turns out as amazing as possible, let’s walk through the steps below.

Step 1: Make the Blueberry Simple Syrup

Start by making the blueberry simple syrup! Pour the granulated sugar, water, blueberries, and the zest and juice of 1 small lime into a small saucepan.

Cook over medium heat, and stir continuously until the mixture just starts to boil. It usually takes about 5 minutes for my simple syrup to reach a boil.

Reduce the heat and allow the mixture to simmer for 3 more minutes. The blueberries should burst during this process.

Remove from heat and pour through a sieve into a medium-sized bowl to cool to room temperature. If you’re making this in advance, it can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Step 2: Muddle those Mint Leaves

Next, add lime juice, blueberry simple syrup and mint leaves and to a cocktail shaker. Use a cocktail muddler (or the end of a wooden spoon) to muddle the mint into the lime juice and simple syrup.

This releases oils from the mint leaves and gives your mojito that signature fresh taste. Then pour in the rum and stir well.

Step 3: Pour It Up and Enjoy!

Pour into a highball glass filled with ice, and top it off with club soda.

Garnish with a lime wedge, blueberries, and a sprig of mint and drink up.

Tips for Making the Best Blueberry Mojito:

  • Use fresh or frozen blueberries for the simple syrup and garnish.
  • Make your simple syrup in advance so it has a chance to cool.
  • Make these mojitos in a tall glass so you have room for lots of ice and club soda.
  • Feel free to adjust the amount of simple syrup and club soda to suit your taste! I like to go light on the simple syrup and heavy on the club soda.
  • Make multiple blueberry mojitos at once by using a large pitcher! Muddle the mint, simple syrup and lime juice together, then stir in the rum. Add ice to each individual glass, the divide the pitcher evenly and top off each glass with club soda.
  • If you don’t have a muddler, don’t worry! Just use the bottom of a wooden spoon.
  • Make a virgin blueberry mojito by omitting the rum, and adding additional club soda in its place.
